Uniek aanbod: Wie wil een asiel in India overnemen?

Bent u al een tijd op zoek naar een mogelijkheid om uw leven een geheel nieuwe wending te geven? Bent u een echte dierenliefhebber? Wilt u dieren daadwerkelijk gaan helpen? Bent u bereid om hiervoor naar een ander werelddeel te emigreren?

Dan is dit misschien wel een unieke kans om uw dromen echt waar te maken! Al enige jaren heb ik - als redacteur van deze site - via diverse dierenwelzijnsorganisaties contact met een wel zeer bijzonder vrouw: Avis Lyons.

In 2000 bracht zij een bezoek aan haar dochter, die tijdelijk in India werkte. Zij werd geconfronteerd met het vele dierenleed in dat land en besloot hier wat voor te gaan doen. Teruggekomen in Essex, Engeland begon zij al snel plannen te maken om alles te verkopen en in India een nieuw leven te beginnen. Een leven waarbij zij zoveel mogelijk dieren wilde gaan helpen in hun harde dagelijks bestaan.

In enkele jaren heeft zij een fantastisch centrum neergezet, waar niet alleen vele dieren verzorgd worden, maar ook heeft zij er een uitgebreid sterilisatieprogramma opgezet, waar inmiddels al duizenden honden en katten geopereerd zijn, door een aantal dierenartsen die haar op vrijwillige basis willen helpen.

Inmiddels is haar centrum SOS Animal Rescue Kovalam in Zuid-India een nationaal en zelfs internationaal begrip geworden. En een voorbeeld voor velen die ook met plannen rondlopen om dieren-in-nood daadwerkelijk te helpen.

Zij heeft goede contacten met de locale autoriteiten, er zijn vele vrijwilligers die haar helpen, zij heeft een uitstekend team om haar heen verzameld en dagelijks worden er vele zwerfdieren in haar centrum fantastisch geholpen. Zij heeft zelfs een prachtig activiteitencentrum opgericht, waar getraumaticeerde dieren weer gesocialiseerd kunnen worden en zo geschikt worden gemaakt voor adoptie.

Maar.... helaas heeft het noodlot juist deze geweldige vrouw getroffen. Er is kanker bij haar geconstateerd en er zit niets anders op, dan het centrum aan iemand anders over te doen. Zij wil er niets aan verdienen en draagt het graag over aan een andere dierenvriend of -vriendin die met dezelfde passie, haar levenswerk wil en kan voortzetten.

U hoeft niet veel geld mee te nemen, want de gebouwen blijven op naam van de familie Lyons staan en de kosten voor levensonderhoud zijn in India veel lager dan hier in Nederland. Om het asiel draaiende te houden is slechts ca. 1.100 euro per maand nodig.

SOS Animal Rescue Kovalam-Beach Kerala/South India

Due to serious illness, Animal Rescue Kerala, ARK, is looking for a group to
take over the running and financing of its centre based near Kovalam,
Kerala.

Animal Rescue Kerala was set up over 8 years ago to implement the Animal
birth control/ anti rabies programme (ABC/AR) , however it also have a
hospital which treats any sick or injured stray dog as well as offering a
reduced rate/free service to pet animals (dependant of owner's salary).

The centre sits in a total of approximately one and a half acres, all in a
walled compound. Half of the area is developed with a purpose-built
hospital, education centre, puppy house, cattery and kenneling.

Approximately 200 animals- dogs, cats, puppies and kittens can be housed at any one time. The undeveloped land, also walled, is currently used as an area for dogs to run and play. This area would lend itself to be further
developed perhaps for staff accommodation or further kenneling.

My mother, Avis Lyons, who currently runs and finances ARK, is suffering
from cancer and as such is looking for a like-minded organization to take
over the running of the centre (this needs to be done by the end of 2009). As there is currently no other active group in the area the service ARK offers is desperately needed.

The centre is currently on a 30 year lease from my mother to Animal Rescue Kerala charitable trust, this lease will be passed over, free of charge, to the new management with provisions by the family that the lease will be renewed after this 30 year period, however the centre must continue to be run as it was set up to do (to continue the ABC/AR programme and to treat the animals with compassion and empathy).

The centre currently costs 1000 UK pounds or 1100 Euro each month (approx 80,000 rupees); this funding will need to be met by the new management.

Animal Rescue Kerala (ARK) is an animal shelter in the south of India which is fighting against the injustice that street dogs and cats have to face every day. The local authorities are organizing slaughter-campaigns because they believe killing dogs is the only way to decrease the number. They catch the dogs with metal wires that cut open their skin, after which they are beaten to death or drowned.
 
ARK shows an alternative and sprays, heals and vaccinates the animals in need.

ARK is in constant need of help on every level possible. They are looking
for people who want to run their education centre, walk with the dogs, feed the puppies, etc.
